Top 10 must see places and tourist destination points in Shimla

Jakhoo Hill – This is located around two km from Shimla. It is the highest hill in Shimla. Breathtaking views await tourists when they reach the top. The beautiful snow capped mountains of Himalaya can also be seen from here. It is located at a whopping height of 8000 feet. It has the famous Jakhoo temple of Lord Hanuman with a very big statue of around 108 meters and has sensors to drive birds away.


Kalka–Shimla RailwayThe Kalka–Shimla Railway is a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge railway in North-West India travelling along a mostly mountainous route from Kalka to Shimla. It is known for dramatic views of the hills and surrounding villages.

Summer Hill – It is also named as Potter’s hill. Earlier it was used by potters to collect clay for making their pots. It has a beautiful scenic view at a height of 1283 meters above sea level. It is around five kms from the famous Ridge, which is always thronged with tourists. This hill is a part of group of seven hills.

Mall Road -  Mall Road is the main street in Shimla, constructed during British colonial rule, the Mall road is located a level below the ridge. Automobiles, except emergency vehicles are not allowed on this road. For this reason, the locals — and tourists(including Indian and foreign) — are often found strolling on this road in the evenings.

Daranghati Sanctuary - It is located around 150 km from Shimla. It is a very important tourist attraction. In the past, it was the hunting reserve for the Royal family of Rampur Bushahar. This reserve was established as sanctuary in 1962.

Annandale – It is also called Annadale and is around four km from the Ridge. This was an playground for British in olden days for cricket and polo. In addition, racing was conducted here. The racecourse is now used as golf course and helipad.

Chadwick falls – It is located around seven kms from Shimla. It falls from a height of 1586 meters. It can be visited by trekking too from summer hill. It is about 45-minute walk. It is a breathtaking sight with beautiful pine and deodar trees on the hill. Shimla’s source of water is Chadwick Falls. The water level increases after monsoon.

Kufri – It is located around 19 km from Shimla. It is situated at Himalayan foothills at an altitude of 2510 meters. This once belonged to the Nepal kingdom. It is a beautiful place for nature lovers.

The Ridge Road– It is located at the center of the town. It is an open space running from east to west near mall or main market. At west is scandal point, which is another famous destination. The view of snow-clad mountains is breathtaking from here. One can also visit the ancient Christ church here along with Tudor library. 

Shimla state museum – It is located atop Mount Pleasant. It was built in the year 1974. Its colonial style building and beautiful gardens are itself a marvelous sight. It throws light of city’s famous past. It has a big collection of art, artifacts, anthropology, and archeology.  

Naldheara and Shaily Peak – Lord Curzon established a golf course here in those days. It is 2044 meters above sea level. The dense forest of Deodar trees and the beautiful snow-clad mountains are a beautiful sight. This is the serene most place where one can hear the winds. Horseback riding is another attraction here. Sunrise and sunset are beautiful and must see sight.

Indian Institute of Advanced Study – It is located in the vice-regal lodge on top of observatory hill. It is also called Rashtrapati Niwas. Dr Radhakrishnan established IIAS here in 1965.
