Ilulissat of Iceland - World iceberg capital

Ilulissat of Iceland - World iceberg capital Greenland

Ilulissat of Iceland, World iceberg capital Greenland – There are some places people think of visiting even in the winters. One of such a place is Ilulissat of Iceland. It is also known as iceberg capital of the world. There are many small and big icebergs to be seen here and this creates a beautiful backdrop.

Ilulissat of Iceland

The landscape of this place is very different. This place has been included in the world heritage site in 2004. Thousands of tourists visit this place throughout the year and this is why many arrangements of entertainment have been organized here.

There are 2 museums worth visiting here, namely Ilulissat Museum and Inuit Art. The life of the local residents has been presented through photographs here. Also various places in Greenland have also been showcased in this museums.

How to reach? People who love winters would love this place. One need not worry about reaching this place as the first pit stop is Greenland and then a plane can be taken for Iceland. Ilulissat airport is 3 km away from the city.

A Different Experience - This picture is of Ilulissat. Photographer Paul had clicked it some months back when the sun’s rays were falling on the iceberg. During these days Ilulissat is fully covered with snow. Not even a ray of sun can reach here in the winters but one can see thousands of icebergs weather in winters or summers.

Greenland
  1. The trip would not be complete without the dog–sled ride. Only 2 to 3 people can sit on the dog-sled at a time. Sometimes the sled driver runs along with the dogs and at other times sits behind the sled or near the travelers. Many adventure sports like Kayaking, Sailing, and Hiking etc. can be experienced here.
  2. The plane ride is the most comfortable transportation to reach Ilulissat but when the river water is calm then this place can be reached by boat too. The beauty of icebergs can be seen from a close distance while traveling through boat which is an amazing experience by itself.
  3. There are mainly icebergs in Ilulissat but there are some beautiful markets as well. There is a beautiful glacier which is around 35 KM from Ilulissat where many icebergs can be seen. The melting rate of this glacier was 22 meters per day in 2002 which increased to 35 meters in 2007 due to global warming.
