Top 10 must see places and tourist destination points in Jaisalmer 


Jaisalmer Fort – It is the pride of Jaisalmer and is situated in the center of the city. It is also called sonar or gold fort as it is made of yellow stones, which gleams at sunset. The fort has many beautiful havelis, temples, houses, and commercial shops of temple residents and army men and around one fourth of city’s population resides here. There are many wells in this fort.


Gadisar Lake- It is a man made lake, which was made by King Maharwal Gadsi in the 14th century. This is a rainy season lake, which was the main source of water in those days. There are many small temples on the lake end. The birds of Bharatpur make a pit stop here during their journey.

Desert National Park – This was made in the year 1980 and represents circumstantial mechanics of the Thar Desert. It is 3161 square kms and has salt lake, dunes, and various kinds of rocks in its topography. Tourists can watch Harrier, Buzzard, Spotted eagle, vultures, and sinning birds of desert. This is also the home of extinct species of Great Indian Bustard, which is the state bird of Rajasthan. Lakes like Rajbagh, Milk and Padam are situated inside the national park.

Kuldhara – It is a historical village around 25 kms from Jaisalmer. It is a haunted site where the tourists are allowed to visit only between sunrise and sunset. There are ruins of 200 years old houses here. In ancient times, there were five hundred families of Paliwal Brahmins residing here. The cruel rulers forced them to leave the village. The people think those families cursed this village.

Khuri Sand Dunes – It is situated in Khuri village around 42 kms from Jaisalmer. The tourists can enjoy camel rides on golden sands of the desert. The camels are adorned specially for the rides. The small huts made of sand and hay makes the backdrop very beautiful. The campfires, folk songs, and kalbaleia dances at night make it a wonderful sight to watch. 

Ludorva – It is situated around 15 kms from Jaisalmer. Bhatti Rajwansh made this its capital in 1156. The main attraction here is Jain Temple. This is dedicated to the third thrithankar Lord Parshwanath. The temple set in yellow stones and intricate meshwork in Rajputana style attracts the tourists. This temple also represents the artwork of Dilwara style of Jains. Many small temples are located here.

Manek Chowk and Havelis – Just outside the fort the Manek Chowk and Havelis are the main tourist attraction. These are adorned with beautiful art, architectures, and statues. The most famous being Patwoon ki Haveli, Salim Singh ki Haveli and Nathmal Ji ki Haveli. The whole area is a commercial set up and is called Sadar Mandi. This is a famous grain market which used to be a busy venture in olden times with Iraq, Egyptian, Arab vendors. Many shopping attractions like leather goods, curios, and silver jewelry can be found here. The artisans can be seen working on their craft here.

Desert culture centre and museum – This is located on Gadisar road. It was established in the year 1997. It boasts of a huge collection of fossils, Ancient scriptures, Medieval Coins, and ethnic statues. The Karal museum has the major attraction being the poppy mixer box. Tourists can see olden vessels, scripts, clothes of those eras etc here. It is open from 10 am to 5 pm.

Bada Bagh Jaisalmer – It is a huge park, which is famous for its royal architecture and Chatriya (royal graveyard) or the resting place of Royal families. Maharaja Mahrawal Jath Singh’s grave is the main and oldest between all the gravesites. This park is located around six kms from Jaisalmer. Other than the gravesites, the tourists can also see the Jathsar Tank, Jath Dam and Goverdhan monument. Whole stones were used to make the Dam and Tank. 

Desert Festival – This is one of the main tourist attractions of Jaislamer and is conducted each year at Sam Sand Dunes. Sam sand dunes are around 42 kms from Jaislamer. The tourists can take part in various programs like camel race, tying turban and biggest and best moustache competition. Rajasthan tourist board organizes it for three days. Earlier it was started to attract national and international tourists but now it is a trend and a big attraction for everyone. Folk dances and songs are a part of this cultural event. Money exchange and credit cards facility is available here.
