China’s smallest city – Sansha

China’s smallest city – Sansha

The Chinese army had constructed a runway at Yongshing Island in 1990 for their military purposes. However, it was not used for many years. The local and residential activities increased there and now there is a small residential population there, which can be counted easily. This city was named Sansha by Chinese government in July 2012. It is around 350 kms southeast of Henan Island. Sansha is known as smallest but longest city of China. Its square meters are around 13 sq kms but its water area is 20 lakh sq kms.

The airplane runway is around 2700 meters long and half of it is constructed on water. The reasons why Chinese army constructed this are unknown. Sansha is the main point of administration activity control of other nearby small islands too. As it is in the sea, many countries have claimed it as theirs. However, Vietnam and Philippines are adamant on this. They do not consider Sasha as a city. However, china has whole sole rights at present on the island.
City is important because -

It is a great fishing and trade route.
There are many crude oil natural sources here.
Around one third of all goods carrying ships go through this route.
